Most of these occurrances are typical anaphoric or ambient references.Demonstrative Reference. Comparative Reference. Substitution. Ellipsis. Conjunction . Lexical Cohesion.Repetition. Synonymy& Antonymy. Meronymy. "The Dutchess and the Jeweller" is much more than a portrayal of a Jeweller. The reader is left with the feeling that is for sale is something infinitely more valuable than a set of false pearls. Take away a consonant, and pearl becomes pear: like the "brown & soft [...] bad pear," the pearls that pass between the Jew and the Duchess are rotten. Indeed, Woolf's choice of adjective, with its inappropriate vegetative connotations (pears can be rotten, but pearls can only be bad) gives the game away, mixing the rank world of ripening and decomposition with the symbolic world of commodity and finance.
