It was the year 1850. A few gold miners had reached the Merced River northeast of today's city of Merced. There they had trouble with a tribe of Indians called the Miwoks (mḗ works). One group of the Miwok tribe called themselves Uzumati, which means ‘‘grizzly bear''. White men pronounced the name Yosemite. Certain officials of the United States government hoped to persuade the Miwok Indians to leave their homes and settle on a special section of land called a reservation. If the Indians stayed on the reservation, the whites could dig for gold in the area around the Merced River without trouble. The Indians did not want to leave their homes. They hid in a deep mountain valley that the Yosemite group knew about. They hoped the whites would not find them...... (APIMTIS 3PSL)
